The main national roads in Slovenia are divided into motorways (in Slovenian: avtocesta or AC) and expressways (in Slovenian: hitra cesta or HC). Vehicles drive on the right side of the road. 

Speed limits

Built-up / residential area: 50 km/h - 31 mi/h
Regional roads: 90 km/h - 55 mi/h
Expressways: 110 km/h - 68 mi/h
Motorways: 130 km/h - 80 mi/h

Parking in cities

  • WHITE marked spaces - free unlimited parking, unless the parking sign specify you to pay the fee in the nearby parking meter.

  • BLUE marked spaces - time-limit parking option (usually 15 or 30 minutes).

  • YELLOW marked spaces - reserved places where parking is not allowed.

Some other important regulations

  • The minimum driver's age must be 18.

  • The safety belt is mandatory for the driver and all passengers.

  • All vehicles must use headlamps even during daytime driving.

  • It is forbidden to use a mobile phone while driving.

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol is not allowed - the blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 parts per thousand.

  • Mandatory equipment in the vehicle includes: a spare set of lights, a first-aid kit, a warning triangle and a reflective vest.

  • Winter equipment is mandatory from 15 November to 15 March: winter tyres with a minimum of 3 mm or summer tyres and snow chains in the vehicle boot (trunk).
